This is a smart way to save electricity which in turn saves you money and, of course, saves the environment prior to Lights Out! Day.
Just unplug it!
When the electricity is turned off on Lights Out! Day it is a great time to begin stargazing. You’ll be surprised at how many stars are visible to the naked eye once all the light pollution has been removed. No binoculars or telescopes needed. Check a stargazing website such as http://stardate.org or http://www.space.com for tips and information on what’s around.
Just get a great lounge chair on the lawn and look up! If you’ve got a neighbor that doesn’t know about Lights Out! Day then let them know – the viewing will be so much better.
On October 10th, 2010 (10.10.10), everyone will turn off any non-essential electricity usage for 24 hours. Turn of all lights, (non-essential) computers, stereos, televisions, etc.
It sounds tough, but it’s only 24 hours. Think about it, you could easily fast for 24 hours – how hard is it to eliminate unnecessary electrical usage?
In the past 4 years the US has used about 4 Trillion kWh per year. Ouch!
It is estimate that 15% to 20% of that is used for lighting alone. That a little more than 1/2 Trillion kWh per year. Could that be a carbon footprint of about 6 Billion tons? WOW!
Let’s start saving!
